Here are some of the events happening in the South Bay from Oct. 25 through Oct. 31: • The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will get into the season with a fun-filled day for the whole family. Pumpkin decorating contest, open to all ages and judged by Friends of Rancho San Pedro. Pumpkins will be judged based on age group, and prizes will be awarded for most color and most creative design. Tools will be provided for the contest. Costume parade Scary stories Light refreshments. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. The event runs from 1 p.m.-3 p.m. Oct. 26 at 18127 S. Alameda St. in Rancho Dominguez. The city of El Segundo Recreation and Parks Departmentwill host its annual Halloween Frolic from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 on the 300 and 400 blocks of Main Street in downtown El Segundo. Costume contest for all ages, sponsored by the El Segundo Kiwanis Club at City Hall Plaza, Carved pumpkin contest, sponsored by the El Segundo Women’s Club. Seven inflatable bounce houses Obstacle course Carnival-style games for younger participants Five food vendors. Admission is free. Wristbands and tickets for games and bounce houses are $8 for unlimited use or $2 per ticket. This year’s annual South Bay Business Hall of Fame luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Holiday Inn Torrance which is located at 18900 South Vermont Ave. One of the recipients will be The Original Red Onion. The Rolling Hills Estates restaurant is one of five inductees this year, according to Brendan Huffman, the South Bay Business Hall of Fame's policy director. "Each of these inductees has contributed significantly to the region’s economy and culture for many decades," Huffman said. OCT. 11 THRU NOV. 10 IN SAN PEDRO Acrobatic performers will be featured under the 66ft. high Blue and Yellow big top, embodying the spirit of amphibians, Native American Hoop Dancers and a figure from outer space called the Crystal Man. The two and one half hour show opens Oct. 11 in San Pedro, at the Port of Los Angeles with the performances scheduled through Nov. 10th. Check it out at Berth 46, 3011 Miner Street. Tickets run from $50 up to $150. Then show travels to the Orange County Great Park Festival Site in Irvine beginning on Nov. 21. The entire show will move to the Santa Monica Pier on Jan. 17th. Can you imagine having 8 large bags of trash every day after school lunch? That is 240 commercial size trash bags per month. Thanks to some environmentally conscience school children at Lunada Bay Elementary School in Palos Verdes Estates now has one bag of trash per week-four per month. What a difference. And because of this reduction in trash Lunada Bay Elementary won the Contest sponsored by Manhattan Beach Environmental nonprofit "Grades of Green" with Chevron donating the prize money. Washington and Riviera were named runners-up. The program called the Trash-Free Lunch Challenge. The program is most successful in our South Bay region In fact it claimed thirteen of the seventeen participants. And we can be proud that five of these are from Torrance Unified. Read More
