Coyote Awareness and Precaution

In March the District informed parents of an ongoing issue with coyotes in the City of Torrance. Since then there has been a significant increase in sightings and coyote attacks on other animals (no humans to date). In an effort to help increase awareness within the community, especially for parents who are visiting parks or other open spaces within the City, the District is providing the attached information from the City of Torrance. Please carefully review the attached information pieces to learn how to, and NOT to deal with a coyote you may see or encounter.

If you see a coyote behaving aggressively or attacking someone, please call 911 right away. To report a coyote sighting please contact the Torrance Police Department immediately at 310-618-5641.

The Torrance City Council, which already has approved some targeted trapping in several problem areas in the city, on Tuesday will consider funding a $25,000 urban coyote management plan. A workshop at occured last week featuring speakers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, a naturalist and manager of the Madrona Marsh Nature Center and the city’s Police Department.

Project Coyote has denounced the city’s move to trap coyotes following widespread sighting and reports of pet killings. The plan to be presented this week calls for trapping and killing in worst-case scenarios. Daily Breeze
