Famous Manhattan Beach Pier
How many of us love to walk out on the Manhattan Beach pier in the evenings and enjoy the scenes and peace and quiet?
Well, the pier has quite a history as has the city of Manhattan Beach. After the first building was built in MB around 1901, two wooden piers were soon built, one at Center Street and one at Marine Avenue. The Center Street pier supported a wave motor to generate power for the Strand lighting system. The next pier was built on the same site and extended about 922 feet into the ocean. Engineer A.L. Harris developed the concept of the circular end for less exposure and damage to the pilings by the waves.
The pier was completed and dedicated on July 5, 1920. Since then the pier has gone through updating, repairs and the pilings fixed and fixed again, but the structure remains a favorite with the towns residents as well as tourists.
