New Park Coming to Hawthorne
The City of Hawthorne has approved a contract for the design of a new city park to be located at Hawthorne Blvd. and 129th street. The $16,500 contract for the park design was with SWA Group, Los Angeles. The council voted 3-2 in favor of the contract, however 2 councilmen opposed the idea and wanted internal staff to design the park. They also wanted to wait until the Hawthorne Blvd. renovations are completed. Reconstruction of Hawthorne Blvd. began last month and will continue through January 2015. The first phase of the renovation is to widen the intersection of Hawthorne Blvd. and Rosecrans Avenue, and the installation of a new sewer pipe and storm drain inlets starting at El Segundo Blvd and going south.
By the time the renovation is completed, there will be new bike lanes, new traffic signals, new left turn pockets and a complete repaving. The new park, when completed will be named: Rocket Park Plaza.
