The 2018 Onizuka Space Science Day will be on Saturday, March 10, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to science-minded students in grades 5-12. The Ellison S. Students must register to attend the event, please register here: bit.ly/eccspace
This year’s featured NASA Astronaut is Robert Shane Kimbrough. Kimbrough is a veteran of two spaceflights, the first being a Space Shuttle flight and the second being a 6-month mission to the International Space Station. He has a total of 6 spacewalks and has logged a total of 189 days in space.
Students will participate in hands-on science activities and experiments, egg drop and paper plane competitions, as well as classroom presentations and demonstrations led by El Camino College professors and guests from other institutions, such as the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Lunch is free for the first 900 students.
This year marks the 32nd anniversary of the Space Shuttle Challenger accident in which Astronaut Ellison Onizuka perished along with the six other crew members. The annual event was created to honor Onizuka’s memory and his dream of inspiring youth to strive for their career goals.
