Space Shuttle Endeavor – Making LA it’s new Home!
Do you remember .. for those who are old enough, the black and white TV of John Glenn in the small space capsule? He was the First American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962, on the Mercury-Atlas 6 mission.
Well jump ahead to 1992 … the Endeavour became a “taxi” service from earth to our space station. What a leap in technology in a few short years! Its last mission was in May 2011.
NOW THE SPACE SHUTTLE GETS TO RETIRE!
Los Angeles County’s newest attraction, the space shuttle Endeavour, will arrive on September 20th. The shuttle, which will be piggy-backing on a Boeing 747, will fly over Los Angeles before landing at LAX. Upon arrival, Endeavour will spend a few weeks at a United Airlines hangar undergoing preparations for transport and display. Then, Endeavour will travel through city streets on a 12-mile journey from the airport to the California Science Center, arriving in the evening of October 13, 2012. This will be the first, last and only time a space shuttle will travel through urban, public city streets. It is truly a national treasure!
A little bit of HISTORY in our own backyard!
