The New Centennial Plaza in Old Torrance is Already Showing Age Now this is a real shame. The Torrance Centennial Plaza which was intended as the city's most enduring legacy of its milestone 2012 celebration is already showing wear and tear after just 10 months. This is a $180,000 El Prado Park centerpiece that includes a time capsule set for opening 99 years from now. This cost was offset by the sale of hundreds of $150 bricks etched with personalized messages. But the lettering on some is already partly obscured, and the sand separating bricks is fast eroding along with birds are leaving their own unsightly legacy behind on the plaza. Obviously the minimum maintenance on the Plaza (which is a two man crew mowing the grass) is not enough. To me it just another example of how our standards are slipping. Wouldn’t the men mowing the lawn notice how the plaza is quickly deteriorating and report it? No they just mow and close their eyes to everything else with no apparent caring or pride in our city. Anyway because it has been neglected it will now cost more money to repair. Read More

Can you imagine having 8 large bags of trash every day after school lunch? That is 240 commercial size trash bags per month. Thanks to some environmentally conscience school children at Lunada Bay Elementary School in Palos Verdes Estates now has one bag of trash per week-four per month. What a difference. Just think of the trash reduction if each school in the State would get involved. Young student sorting trash after lunch.(Robert Casillas / Daily Breeze Staff Photographer). And because of this reduction in trash Lunada Bay Elementary won the Contest sponsored by Manhattan Beach Environmental nonprofit "Grades of Green" with Chevron donating the prize money. For years, many critics argued that when a big box store like Walmart comes to town, it would automatically bring lower home values to those homes near-by. This was referred to as the "Walmart Effect" and over the years it made near-by residents nervous and often prompted those residents to oppose the proposed store. Following is a video of the Torrance area where the new Walmart is being constructed. A new study, according to Realtor Magazine, reports that just the opposite happens. The researchers found that homes within a half mile of a new Walmart store saw their home prices increase on an average about $7,000 in the two-and-a-half years after the store opened. Homes located a half mile to one mile away saw a $4,000 increase. These results came after analyzing more than 1 million real estate transactions, near 159 newly opened Walmart stores between 2000 and 2006. So, residents near to the new incoming Walmart store at Hawthorne Blvd. and Sepulveda, your property values maybe going up. That is good news for sure. Read More
