Torrance Rose Float Association Wins Again!
Torrance Rose Float Association Wins Again! In the 128th Tournament of Roses Parade on Monday, January 2, 2017, the Torrance Rose Float Association won the VOLUNTEER TROPHY for the entry “BE YOUR OWN KNIGHT “. Torrance Rose Float Association Wins Again! This is the 62nd Rose Parade entry for the Torrance Rose Float Association.
The theme of the 2017 parade was “Echoes of Success”. This year, TRFA invited students from the Torrance High Schools to participate in a float design contest. Lindsey Beckmeyer, a West High School senior submitted the concept winning design. Lindsey can be seen on the float as the brave knight fighting the fire-breathing dragon.
“BE YOUR OWN KNIGHT” dramatically turns the traditional fairy-tale gender roles upside-down and acknowledges the strength of “girl power”. The brave knight in shining armor is a young woman who takes up sword and shield and her castle and citizens from the furious winged dragon creating havoc at the front of the float.
Tim Estes, the President of the Fiesta Float Design Co, took Lindsey’s design and created a wonderful color illustration. Fiesta Floats builds the float and Volunteers spend two days in preparation by cutting dry flowers. Then, from the day after Christmas through the next four days, they are gluing, pasting, trimming and adding flowers, seeds, and leaves. Many man-hours are donated to create this award-winning float!
The Rose Vials are the last flowers to go on the float. A Rose Vial donation is $10 and can be tagged in memory or honor of a loved one, friend or yourself. Imagine traveling down Colorado Blvd on New Years Day!
